How many players

Played by 1 or 2: solo against the computer, or online against another player.

Online: create a room and send the link to a friend, or get matched with a random opponent. If nobody shows up, we offer a clearly labeled computer opponent.

Goal: Guess the word letter by letter before you run out of balloons.

The letters are hidden; the category is shown as a hint.
Tap a letter on the on-screen keyboard. If it’s in the word, every copy of it opens up.
If it isn’t, a balloon pops. You have 7 balloons; lose them all and our buddy drops into the pond.
Get the word and your streak goes up by 1; miss it and it resets. Your record is your longest streak.
Words get harder as your streak grows: medium after 3 words, hard after 7.

A hint opens one letter without counting as a miss. Tap twice to confirm; once per word. That word won’t raise your streak, but won’t break it either.
Duel the computer: same word, you take turns. Guess right and you go again; guess wrong and one of your balloons pops and the turn passes.
Each duel round gives you 5 balloons. Whoever opens the last letter, or outlasts the other’s balloons, takes the round. First to 3 rounds wins (5 rounds max).
The duel computer doesn’t know the word. Easy is a bit absent-minded, Medium goes by letter frequency, Hard works out which words fit the pattern.

Online is a duel: same rules as against the computer, the server picks the word and nobody sees it until the round ends.
Words are in the room’s language: if the host opened the room on the English site, the words and keyboard are in English.
Each turn is 20 seconds. Run out of time and you lose a balloon and the turn passes; you don’t lose the match.
You take turns starting rounds, with a 3.5-second break between them.
If you get disconnected, you have 60 seconds to come back or your opponent wins. Leaving the game also hands them the win.
Both of you have to ask for a rematch; the other side starts the first round of the rematch.
