How to play Word Chain: last letter rules and winning tips
Word Chain is the classic last letter game: every word has to start with the last letter of the word before it. Sounds easy, until the clock shrinks and you’re handed a Z. This guide covers Stockboi’s rules, what happens with words ending in X and the tricks that box your opponent in.
What is the word chain game?
The word chain game is played out loud on car trips, in queues and around the dinner table: someone says “apple”, the next person needs an E word, “egg”, then G, “guitar”, then R, “river”. Whoever can’t find one is out.
On Stockboi, Word Chain is a two-player duel. You play against the computer or an online opponent. No arguing with the referee: a dictionary checks the words and the game keeps time.
Word chain game rules
- The game gives you a starting letter and the first word starts with it. Starting letters always have plenty of words: A, B, C, D, F, G, H, L, M, P, R, S, T or W.
- You take turns. Each word has to start with the last letter of the previous word. That letter is highlighted on screen and already filled in for you.
- Words need at least 3 letters and can’t already be in the chain.
- You both have 3 lives. Type a word that isn’t in the dictionary, run out of time or pass, and you lose a life.
- When you lose a life, the turn goes to your opponent but the letter stays the same: the letter you got stuck on is now their problem.
- A wrong first letter, a word shorter than 3 letters or a repeat doesn’t cost a life; you get a warning, fix it and send again.
- First to lose all three lives loses. There are no draws.
How the clock works
Each turn starts at 15 seconds. Every time the chain grows by 8 words, the clock loses 1 second: 14 seconds after 8 words, 13 after 16. It bottoms out at 8 seconds; from the 56th word on, every move gets 8 seconds.
Run out of time and you lose a life. In long games the clock is the real opponent, so the first valid word that pops into your head is usually the best move.
Words ending in X: what letter comes next?
Plenty of everyday words end in X (box, fox, six, relax), but hardly any start with it. So on Stockboi, a word ending in X continues from the letter before the X: BOX → O, SIX → I, RELAX → A. The highlighted letter is always the one you need.
Many tables play without this rule and an X ending simply leaves the next player stuck. Stockboi skips the X so the chain keeps moving.
Which words count?
In English games, plurals and verb forms are fine: CATS and WALKED both count. Names of people and places aren’t in the dictionary, so LONDON won’t work.
Capitals don’t matter, accents and apostrophes are ignored (CAFÉ is the same as CAFE), and words can only use the letters A to Z.
A word that isn’t in the dictionary costs a life. Your opponent never sees what you typed, only that you lost a life.
Word chain tips and strategy
- Push your opponent toward tough letters. Lots of words end in Y (happy, city, story), far fewer start with it. K works the same way: book, park, milk, desk.
- Use the Z trap: quiz, jazz, buzz, fizz, waltz. Your opponent has to come up with zoo, zero, zebra or zip, fast.
- Don’t hand over an S. Every plural ends in S, and S is the easiest starting letter there is. The same goes for most words ending in E, D or T.
- Watch the chain. Easy words for a letter get used up in a long game; once yellow, young and yard are gone, the Y trap gets sharper.
- Keep a few spares ready for common letters like E, S and T. When the clock drops to 8 seconds, there’s no time to think.
- Pass only as a last resort. A pass costs a life too, so if any valid word comes to mind, however boring, type it.
Common mistakes
- Typing a name: proper nouns aren’t in the dictionary and cost a life.
- Forgetting the X rule: after BOX you start with O, not X.
- Typing a two-letter word: OX is a real word, but too short to count.
- Burning the clock on the perfect trap: a timeout costs a life, which is far worse than playing an ordinary word.
A short history of the last letter game
Word chain games are played in many languages, no pen or paper needed. The best-known version is probably Japan’s shiritori, where saying a word that ends in ん loses on the spot, because no Japanese word starts with that sound.
The Turkish version of Stockboi’s game has its own fix: no Turkish word starts with Ğ, so a word ending in Ğ continues from the letter before it. The English version does the same with X.
How to play Word Chain on Stockboi
- Vs computer: choose Easy, Medium or Hard, and you always play the first word. Easy uses short everyday words and stumbles now and then. Hard is quick, rarely stumbles and pushes you toward letters with few words. Every level stumbles more as the chain gets longer.
- Play with a friend: create a room and send the link; the game starts as soon as they open it.
- Random opponent: get matched with someone who wants to play right now. If nobody turns up, we tell you so, and you can play the computer instead.
- Online, the server checks every word. Rooms play in the language of whoever created them: a room made on the Turkish site uses Turkish words.
- If you disconnect, you have 60 seconds to come back or your opponent wins. Leaving also hands them the win. Both of you have to ask for a rematch. No account needed.
Frequently asked questions
What are the rules of the word chain game?
Each word starts with the last letter of the one before it. An unknown word, a timeout or a pass costs a life, and whoever loses all 3 lives first loses.
What happens with words that end in X?
On Stockboi you continue from the letter before the X: BOX → O. Hardly any words start with X, so it’s skipped.
Do plurals count in Word Chain?
Yes, in English games plurals and verb forms like CATS and WALKED count. Names of people and places don’t.
How long do you get for each word?
15 seconds at first. The clock drops by 1 second every 8 words, down to a minimum of 8.
Can you use the same word twice?
No. If you type a word that’s already in the chain, you get a warning and have to find another one, but you don’t lose a life.
How many people can play Word Chain?
Two: you against the computer or against an online opponent, invited by link or matched at random.
Which letters are hardest in a word chain?
Few English words start with X, Z, Y, Q, J or K. Ending your words on Z, Y or K is the classic way to put pressure on your opponent.
