How to play hangman: rules, best letters and strategy

Hangman is the game of finding a hidden word one letter at a time: a right letter opens up in the word, a wrong one costs you a life. In Balloon Hangman, your lives are the balloons keeping our buddy in the air. This guide covers the rules, which letters to try first and how to crack a word with as few misses as possible.

What is hangman and how is it set up?

In the classic paper version, one player thinks of a word and draws a blank for each letter; the other guesses letters. Every wrong guess adds a piece to the drawing, and the guesser wins by finding the word before the drawing is finished.

On Stockboi the game picks the word, so nobody knows it in advance. You see one box per letter plus the word’s category, one of 21 such as Animal, Fruit, Job, City, Country or Sport. Instead of a drawing, your misses are shown as balloons; lose them all and our buddy drops into the pond.

English words are 4 to 12 letters long, single words, using only the letters A to Z.

Balloon Hangman rules

  • You guess one letter at a time. There’s no guessing the whole word; the word is solved when its last letter opens.
  • If the letter is in the word, every copy of it opens at once. Three Es means all three show up.
  • If it isn’t, a balloon pops. In Streak mode you have 7 balloons; when the seventh pops, the word is lost.
  • You can’t guess the same letter twice, and letters you’ve tried stay marked on the keyboard.
  • In Streak mode you can use one Hint per word: it opens a hidden letter without counting as a miss. You tap it twice to confirm, so it never fires by accident.

Streak mode and duels: how Stockboi plays

Streak mode counts how many words you get in a row. A word solved without a hint adds 1 to your streak, a lost word resets it to zero, and a word solved with a hint keeps your streak where it is. Your record is your longest streak.

Words get harder as the streak grows: the first 3 words are a warm-up, then medium words arrive, and after 7 words the hard ones start, with the odd medium word mixed in.

In a duel, two players solve the same word on the same board, taking turns. Guess right and you go again; guess wrong and one of your own balloons pops and the turn passes. Each of you has 5 balloons per round.

Whoever opens the last letter takes the round, and a player who runs out of balloons loses it. First to 3 rounds wins the match; it lasts 5 rounds at most and can’t end in a draw.

A word, step by step

  1. You see 5 boxes and “Category: Animal”. You need a five-letter animal.
  2. You start with E. One E, in the last box: _ _ _ _ E.
  3. You try A, and it’s missing; a balloon pops. Still useful: snake and whale are out.
  4. You try O and it opens the second box: _ O _ _ E. Then S: _ O _ S E.
  5. Two animals fit: horse and mouse. Instead of guessing blindly, call the letter that splits them. M is only in mouse.
  6. You say M: M O _ S E. Then U, and the word is done: MOUSE. One balloon lost, streak up by 1.

Best letters to start hangman with

Short answer: start with E. In our current English word list, E appears in about 57% of words, followed by A (about 50%) and R (about 49%).

After those come O, N, I, T and L, each appearing in roughly a third or more of the words. Those eight letters build the skeleton of most words in the game.

Save the rare letters for last. In our list, Q, X, J, Z and V show up in very few words, and F, W and Y aren’t common either. Only call them when the pattern clearly asks for them.

Hangman strategy that actually works

  • Read the category first. “Color” or “Weather” narrows the answer far more than “Object”, and you can start testing real candidates much sooner.
  • Watch the endings. Job words often end in -er or -ist (baker, dentist); if the last two boxes are still closed, E and R are a strong bet.
  • Use word length. Short words of 4 or 5 letters give you less pattern to work with, so every common consonant you open matters more.
  • Once a pattern appears, stop counting letters and start listing words. With _ O _ S E on screen, list what fits and call the letter that splits your candidates.
  • Keep the hint for emergencies. It protects your streak but doesn’t raise it, so it’s best saved for your last balloon on a pattern you truly can’t read.
  • In a duel, a right guess keeps your turn. Call the letters you’re sure about first; a risky letter that misses costs you a balloon and hands the board to your opponent.

Common hangman mistakes

  • Running through every vowel. After E and A, calling I, O and U one by one without looking at the pattern burns balloons fast.
  • Ignoring double letters. Words like sheep, rabbit or coffee repeat letters, and a correct guess opens every copy, so a pattern with two gaps side by side often hides a double.
  • Starting without reading the category. It’s the one free clue you get on every word.
  • Leaving the last letter open in a duel. If you know the word, open the safe letters first; whoever opens the last letter takes the round.

A short history of hangman

Hangman is an old pencil-and-paper guessing game. Its exact origin isn’t known, but it has been passed down through classrooms, notebooks and long car rides for generations, and teachers like it because it makes spelling and vocabulary feel like play.

Since the gallows drawing feels grim to many people, friendlier versions have always existed: a snowman, a flower, a bunch of balloons. Balloon Hangman follows that tradition. Nobody gets hanged; the worst that happens is a splash in the pond.

How to play Balloon Hangman on Stockboi

  • Vs computer: on the game screen, pick Streak mode or a duel against the computer. The duel computer doesn’t know the word: Easy is a bit absent-minded, Medium plays by letter frequency, Hard works out which words fit the pattern.
  • Play with a friend: create an online room and send the link. The server picks the word and neither of you sees it until the round ends.
  • Random opponent: get matched with someone looking for a game right now. If nobody turns up, we say so clearly and offer a game against the computer.
  • In online duels each turn is 20 seconds. Run out of time and you lose a balloon and the turn passes; rounds have a short break in between. If you get disconnected, you have 60 seconds to come back.
  • Words follow the room’s language: rooms created on the English site use English words and an English keyboard. No account needed, you can play as a guest right away.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do you get in hangman?

In the paper game it depends on the drawing. In Balloon Hangman’s Streak mode you get 7 balloons; in a duel each player has 5 balloons per round.

What is the best first letter in hangman?

E is the safest start: in our English word list it appears in about 57% of words. A and R come next.

How do you play hangman with two players?

On paper, one player picks a word and the other guesses. On Stockboi the game picks the word and you both guess letters on the same word in turns; whoever opens the last letter takes the round, and first to 3 rounds wins.

Can I guess the whole word?

No, on Stockboi you only guess letters. If you know the word, just call its remaining letters; correct letters never cost a balloon.

What does the hint do?

It opens one hidden letter without counting as a miss. That word won’t be added to your streak, but it won’t break it either. You get one hint per word.

Is Balloon Hangman free?

Yes. It runs in your phone’s browser with no download and no account; you can play solo or invite a friend with a link.
